Summary:
This paper discusses the contribution of converter-interfaced energy storage devices to the voltage stability in transmission systems. To this aim, the paper presents static and dynamic voltage stability analyses based on a modified version of the well-known WSCC 9-bus, 3-machine test system. Results of the analyses, which have been compared with those of the more common Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) devices, indicate that converter-interfaced energy storage systems will play a crucial role in the voltage stability of systems with high penetration of renewable energy sources.
Keywords: Voltage stability; converter-interfaced energy storage system (CI-ESS); static synchronous compensator (STATCOM); renewable energy source (RES); Hopf bifurcation
